Goat – New York & Italian style restaurant

Goat is a nicely decorated restaurant offering something for everybody – wood-fired pizzas, main course salads, risotto, grilled meats and fish. The food was good, nothing special, but the place is very nice for people watching and has a nice feel to it. The upstairs bar is very nice to stop by for a class of Pimms or a cocktail.

Nam Long le Shaker – a must-try Flaming Ferrari

I have no idea what the food is like in this modest looking Vietnamese restaurant, but Nam Long le Shaker (established 1987)  is famous for being the home to the legendary Flaming Ferrari, a drink many make the pilgrimage to South Kensington for exclusively. This drink is a sure party starter, although I have witnessed one occasion, when it seemed to have no effect to the drinker – maybe because the amount of pints already consumed on that day was so huge, but for the rest of the people – as my dear boyfriend puts it – it makes your face feel funny!  (more…)

Sushi Samba – blend of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine

Sushi Samba is located up on the 38th & 39th floors of the Heron Tower. It was opened in 2012 in London but it is still notoriously difficult to book a table for – you need to do it about two months in advance especially for the Friday and Saturday evening slots. However, you can also book a table from the bar, which is easier, but as the bar side is so busy, you won’t really be able to enjoy the full experience. Furthermore, the dining room itself (above in the picture) is very beautiful and if you are dining there, you can continue the evening at the drinks bar outside the dining room, overlooking the Gherkin (Swiss Re’s UK Head office). The view is just amazing especially if you happen to be there for the sunset. It may get a bit cold if it is very windy, but on a warm summer night, it is just perfect. It is also much less busy than the terrace on the bar side, where it is impossible to get drinks.  (more…)

Zuma – Contemporary Japanese

This is my absolutely favorite restaurant in London – a contemporary Japanese restaurant in Knightsbridge. Yes, this is a posh restaurant in a very posh area, but yet, you can see families with children here as well. All the people with whom we have been there have agreed that it actually has a very relaxed atmosphere – although I am also so fashion-oblivious that I couldn’t tell if a person next to me was wearing very expensive clothes or something from Next, so I don’t really care if a place is posh or not as long as the staff is nice.  (more…)

Coya – modern Peruvian

Coya restaurant and bar is a modern Peruvian restaurant, in between the Hyde Park Corner and Green Park tube stations (I would prefer to get off at the Green Park station, as the Hyde Park Corner tube station is just hideous and distressing). I really liked the atmosphere they have been able to create in the dimly lit downstairs dining room, which has an open kitchen, where you can see the chefs preparing the dishes. We had no idea what we were ordering as the menu basically just lists the main ingredients of the dishes (not how they are prepared), but everything we ordered was delicious! And whenever we saw something good on the neighboring tables, we just tried that. All the dishes are relatively small, semi posh and everything is ordered to share. Everything was just super fresh and extremely tasty  – I can’t wait to go back there again.  (more…)

Gaucho – Argentinian Steakhouse

Gaucho is a bit more trendy steakhouse, specialized in Argentinian steaks. I would say, Gaucho is maybe the third best steak restaurant in London (although I’ve not yet been to Goodmans, which is supposed to be the second best). There are quite many Gaucho restaurants around London, but make sure you don’t mix them up with El Gaucho, which is a completely different restaurant.  (more…)

Maze – Gordon Ramsay

We went here to celebrate a birthday last year and had one of the best fine dining dinners we have ever had – everything was just excellent. Maze has one Michelin Star and it is located in Mayfair so it is a bit posh, but I think it has still a fairly relaxed atmosphere. The staff is very professional but not stuck-up. They also have an excellent value for money set menu, which includes altogether 4 courses and costs £30 (you can choose from 7 savoury and 2 sweet courses). The set menu is available from Monday to Sunday for lunch and Sunday to Thursday if you make a reservation that starts before 6:45pm.  (more…)

Hawksmoor – Best Steaks in London and a manly breakfast

Hawksmoor is definitely the best steak restaurant in London and they have an excellent value for money Express menu, which is available from noon to 18:30 and again after 22:00 Monday-Saturday (2 courses £24.00, 3 courses £27.00). In this menu though, the rib-eye is only 250g, but with a starter like Potted beef & bacon with Yorkshires and a traditional British pudding (I’m still having hard time learning that pudding is a general word for a dessert in the UK) like sticky toffee pudding or eton mess, no one has complained about having left hungry from the restaurant yet (and we are big eaters and love our steaks).  (more…)
